How metadata is stored in WebP
A WebP file is a RIFF container. Simple WebP files hold only the image; to carry metadata the file needs a VP8X header plus EXIF and XMP chunks. The editor converts the header automatically and sets the right flags, so browsers display the image exactly as before.
Convert JPG or PNG to WebP with metadata
Choose WebP as the output format and set the quality (75–85 is a good balance) or tick lossless. Your title, description, copyright and keywords are written into the new WebP.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebP support EXIF?
Yes. The WebP extended format supports EXIF, XMP and ICC colour profiles.
Will my WebP get bigger?
Only by the size of the metadata – usually 1–4 KB.
Does WordPress keep WebP metadata?
WordPress keeps the original upload unchanged; resized copies it generates may drop metadata depending on your image library settings.
